Lac du Flambeau Vacay

It's been some time now since I spent seven glorious days up north at Brian's parent's house in Lac du Flambea, and I still wish I could rewind time and do it all over again.  Typically we only visit for long weekends, but seeing as how Brian wasn't up to a normal summer trip, we decided to prolong our up north visit and turn it into our vacation.  Seeing as how I will never be able to adequately detail all of our fun, let me give you this:

Seven Words for Seven Glorious Days in the North Woods, WI

1. Sun

4. Family - at one point, there were nine of us sharing two bedrooms and one bathroom.

Well, summer is coming to a close, and looking back on all this fun makes me eager for our next family fun time up north.  Until next time, everyone!

Just a Little Evening Adventure

Sometimes you have those days that turn out to be so very different than you expected them to be.  Wednesday was one of those days.  We welcomed houseguest Tuesday evening, and I thought I might do a bit of climbing with them in the morning, but then I expected to return to my typical routine - take a hike/go for a run, do some work and head to the gym for some evening climbing with Brian.  Instead, we decided to solo the Second Flatiron, a six-hundred or so foot climb up one of Boulder's most notable landmarks.     To the best of my recollection, I have not soloed anything before (read: climb without a rope or protection/gear).  The only part that unnerved me, however, was the 'jump.'  This was a point where, along the climb, you are required to leap across a divide in the rocks. Lesson Learned

A few weeks ago I began physical therapy.  My ankle has been slowly improving; the same did not hold true for my attitude early last week.  My therapist asked me to do this specific exercise where I had to focus on the position of my knees, ankles and hips all at the same time; additionally, I had to do two other movements.  Because my ankle is weak and because I struggled to keep every instruction clear in my mind while ignoring the discomfort I was feeling, I couldn't do what he was asking.  Believe me, I was trying.  My frustration was growing, and I know my therapist was becoming annoyed with me.  He kept barking instructions, and I kept thinking I better keep it together or I might just yell/cry right on the spot.  I nearly had a rage blackout when he told me that since I wasn't doing it right, I should simply try a few more sets of 10. A Wisconsin Tradition

August 13, 2010 Though I’ve made a habit of visiting the Wisconsin State Fair with my parents on its opening day, this year I was unable to do so; I was still recovering from surgery. Understanding my love of the fair and my need to get out of the house, Brian agreed to take me to the fair on Friday night.  We met up with his cousin, Amy, her husband, and our sister, Becky. There was some rain in the forecast, but that did not deter us, and neither did my inability to walk.  I got my first wheelchair riding experience (see my previous post for a picture of wheelchair-bound Amy).  I haven’t yet recovered my normal appetite, but I did my best to sample some of the fair goodies.  Most important on my list of must-eats was flavored milk - nothing deep-fried or on a stick for this girl!  I’m convinced that it’s not only the tastiest treat at the fair but also the most economical - it’s only a quarter per glass!
